VICTIM OR VICTOR?

13/09/2026

You Cannot Always Choose What Happens. But You Can Choose What Happens Next.

Life does not always ask for our permission.

A relationship ends. A business fails. Someone disappoints us. An opportunity disappears. We receive news we were not prepared for—or find ourselves living a life that no longer feels like our own.

We cannot control every storm that arrives. But we can decide whether we allow it to choose our final destination.

There are moments when we are genuinely victims of circumstances we did not create. Acknowledging the pain does not make us weak, negative or responsible for what happened. It makes us honest.

But there is an important difference between experiencing something beyond our control and allowing it to control the rest of our story.

The longer we remain focused only on what happened to us, the more power we hand over to the past. We wait for someone to apologise. For circumstances to become fair. For fear to disappear. For confidence to arrive. For somebody else to show us the way.

And while we wait, life keeps moving.

Becoming the victor of your own story does not mean pretending that everything is fine. It does not require constant positivity, fearlessness or having every answer.

It begins with one honest question:

What can I choose now?

Perhaps you cannot change what happened, but you can decide what meaning you give it.

Perhaps you cannot remove the wall in front of you, but you can take the first step towards moving through it.

Perhaps you cannot control how other people see you, but you can stop allowing their expectations to determine your direction.

Perhaps you do not feel ready—but you can act anyway.

Taking ownership of your life is not the same as blaming yourself for everything. Blame keeps us looking backwards. Ownership allows us to look forward. It reminds us that even when our choices are limited, we usually still have one: how we respond and what we do next.

This is what it means to become the captain of your own life.

A captain cannot control the wind, the waves or the arrival of a storm. But a captain remains present, adjusts the sails and continues to choose a direction.

The same is true for us.

We do not become confident and then begin. We often become confident because we begin. We do not discover our strength by avoiding every difficult moment. We discover it by meeting life as it is—and refusing to let one chapter become the whole story.

So perhaps the most important question is not:

"Why did this happen to me?"

Perhaps it is:

"Who will I choose to become because of what happened?"
